Are you Stoned right now?

This is blog post (#5) is one of two open for comments October 9-12.

One of my favorite artists is British singer/songwriter Joss Stone. As someone who is “Stoned”, a fan of Joss Stone, i believe she is an incredible vocalist who has a very soulful quality to her voice that is incomparable. Born Joscelyn Stoker in 1987, Joss has been involved in music and the arts since she was young. She has released several albums since her debut in 2003. The soulful sound of her voice gives her the unique advantage to not being put into one category of music which allows for more listeners to experience her music. Some of the genres her music falls in include R&B/soul, reggae, and blue-eyed soul. My favorite song by her, Spoiled, is off of her second album, Mind, Body & Soul. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bll9is640ME . If you love music with a soft melody but powerful lyrics like I do, then I think Joss Stone is the perfect artist for you. As a songwriter, Joss is able to express herself in ways that many listeners connect with. Even if her songs are about heartbreak, she makes you feel sad but also comforted in a sense. Her song “Spoiled” especially is one of those songs. I think the rasp of her voice and the way she pronounces and emphasizes words is extremely mesmerizing. She sings about her heart-break but she also sings about being able to put pride aside and maybe things can work out. Pride is a something we all deal with in every aspect of life. Does the pitch or key an artist sings in make a difference in whether you as the listener, pay attention to the lyrics or the instrumentation?  I hope that listening to this song will inspire you guys to go listen to more of her music.

P.S., I absolutely love acoustic versions of any genre of music so here is a bonus piece I think you guys will love. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_AzWsLdLOQ . Enjoy!!

  1. I feel like the pitch does make a difference when a artist is singing because it tells the listener how serious the artist is and it also adds feeling and emotion in a way.

    1. I agree with you because not everyone can sing every pitch there is and practice is what makes them able to sing those notes. The way they potty the notes is who they use their voice to manipulate how it will sound to the listeners.

    1. i love that comparison! i never thought of the beat like that but it is soooooo true. you can have something good but once you have the right flavoring or beat, it makes it that much better.

    1. you are right. do you think you’d like this song more if the beat was faster paced? Same lyrics just different beat?

      1. I think it would’ve been great if the beats were faster. Because it’s really slow and it’s makes your really sad.

  5. I love how she used guitar, drums, keyboard (?), and chorus for this song. It kind of feels cozy in the winter time. The lyrics may mean different it kind of feels pleasant. Her voice mixes very well with the song.

  6. I think her pitch and the key she sings in doesn’t really make a difference because even if she sings higher, her voice is so husky i can’t really tell she’s singing a high note.

    1. i agree with you on how her voice is so husky. You can’t tell if shes singing a high pitch, from what i’m hearing its pretty low and just a normal tone. She would go a bit higher but not that high where it becomes different.

  7. I’m really like this song you picked. It’s a song that can change a persons mood. The vocals does make and impact on if I want to keep listening or just cast it aside. The grasp in her voice makes a big difference and makes me want to continue to listen to what else she has to offer to my ears.

    1. I believe it’s a combination of both, but i also believe that if you put your mind and dedicated yourself to your craft one can overcome talent.

  8. The pitch does not really make a difference for any song. If a song’s mood is based on a sad event, the pitch does not change the mood. The pitch may go higher or lower but the song will still be the same, sad or happy.

    1. with everything, this will be a matter of opinion. I would have to say her most famous album is “the Soul Sessions” released in 2003 because that is the album that went multi-platinum as far as total number of sales.

  9. The beginning of the song i get the feeling that the artist wants u to feel. She wants u to feel pain and sadness that’s what I get from the song and the slow Melody also give me at feeling of pain.

    1. It’s definitely a heartbreaking song. When you leave someone you love, and regret your decision later on in your life.

  10. I haven’t heard this particular song from her, but her name sounded familiar, so I searched through my music library, and I found that I have two songs from her which I enjoy very much. I definitely recommend listening to “Bruise but Not Broken” and “The Love We Had”, if anyone likes her songs. In my opinion, Joss Stone has this old school feel to her voice, but blends very well with the modern era. She has such a powerful voice. The pitch that an artist sings in is very important in a song, it expresses the parts of the song more dramatically.

  11. This song is sort of confusing on how it was said but the difference of the pitch, when an artist is singing does matter because it shows a listener how serious the artist is and how much feeling they are putting to this song. The song, lyrics and pitch all matter and it this case, this song is sad and the singer is absolutely confused.

  12. What I like about this song is the video that fits with it, it’s sort of weird on how the cars crashed then came back to normal and went back to the beginning of the video, which all of this happened in the end, it just shows how she went through all of that and would like another beginning in the future.

  14. She makes good music but she’s not my type. But I learned about a new artist today. I think she should use faster beats on her music to make it perfect
