Go home Vince Neil, you’re drunk

Motley Crue was a popular band of the 80’s known for their long hair, good looks and heavy music. The band consists of Vince Neil, the singer, Tommy Lee, the drummer and piano player, Mick Mars, the guitarist (who is very underrated in my opinion), and Nikki Sixx, the bassist. They made their debut with their first hit album and single Too Fast For Love in 1981. As the band’s popularity went through the roof, they became glorified sex symbols in the world of rock-n-roll, which is reflected in the context of their music.

Being the rock icons that they were, being glorified for their raunchy lyrics and hardcore guitar solos in songs such as, Girls, Girls, Girls and Kickstart My Heart and Shout At The Devil, from their earlier albums, coming out with a song as insightful and powerful like Home Sweet Home really showed a different side to the group. At the time of their immediate success when the group was constantly touring and making music, Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx and Vince Neil got heavily involved with drugs and drugs. Nikki Sixx was constantly in and out of rehab and developed a heroin addiction that he battled for years. The years that he was in his darkest time was 1986, just as the bands fame was only getting larger. Tommy Lee also struggled with addiction,  but not the way Sixx did. Nikki Sixx’s book, The Heroin Diaries, undoubtedly allows the reader to visualize what touring was actually like from Sixx firsthand.

When Tommy Lee wrote Home Sweet Home, it shows you that partying is fun and all but there is no place like home. This is a very significant song with a powerful meaning because to the members of Motley Crue and their fans, they had never made a song that touched so many fans the way Home Sweet Home did. Everyone wants to be home or at a place they consider home. Releasing Home Sweet Home changed their career because the fans never saw that vulnerable, softer side to the band. Giving off the message to their fans that even they miss home. Tommy and Nikki did not really get along with Vince Neil because of his ego problem that he formed on the road. Simple differences in personality can affect a bandmates experience when touring given that there were four band members who had found each other at different points in their lives. Each of the members struggled with their own addiction problem, there came a point in their career where it wasn’t just about the music anymore, and that is when Tommy Lee realized that. The book, The Dirt, which is written through the perspective of each individual member hich genuinely allows the reader to compare and contrast the dynamic of the group. It is important because the band temporarily went their separate ways in the 90’s signifying how it was time to go home. Although the band reunited by making a new album in 2008 and have not stopped touring since, Home Sweet Home indicated that the band was in need of a break from the life of rock-n-roll to find themselves. The history of the Motley Crue remains apparent in the song, Home Sweet Home, because the experiences that the members of the band underwent shaped their career as well as the writing of the song.

This is an interview which the members of Motley Crue:

Something to pay attention to when listening to Home Sweet Home, is the piano because it is repeated throughout the song in the beginning and at the end. The piano is repeated softly in the beginning and end of the song which balances out the guitar in the middle. It is significant that the piano is in the beginning and at the end because you are left off with the same feeling in the end that you felt when the song first began. To me, the guitar solo speaks the loudest, not just because it is the loudest but because the sharpness of the notes as well of the depth in the solo gives me a raw, soulful feeling. The lyrics are important because it really illustrates the meaning of the song in Neil’s voice, as well as the guitar solo later on in the song.

“Just take this song and you’ll never feel left all alone”

This line in particular stands out to me because as a fan it is reassuring me that Motley Crue is still there. Which is also the same feeling that is presented to me through the guitar solo and loud drums in the background throughout the song.

I was introduced to Motley Crue at a young age, being that my father was always listening to them and I caught on soon enough along with all the other types of music I listen to that is from the same time, the 70’s and 80’s. As I grew up and was able to understand the music better in terms of lyrics and meaning, I was curious about Motley Crue which is what led me to read the bands books. The reason I chose Home Sweet Home is because it is a song that I can relate to and a song that I believe many people can relate to and is personally one of my favorite songs.

Do you think that the band would have been as equally successful is they did not temporarily breakup given the issues that they battled individually?

What do you think is more powerful in this song, the lyrics or the music itself?

  1. There aren’t many rock bands anymore and to be honest, I’m not a fan of rock band. However, I feel that they get the least of respect sometimes. They work harder to make music because unlike other artists, they use their own guitar, bass, drums, keyboard to make one music. Others make music in the studio and just record over an already made song. I think that although motley Crue split up temporarily, I think they made the right choice to come back together. I think these rock bands are all legends because we won’t be listening to them anymore. Only their old work we can listen to.

    1. I completely agree, now its really hard for rock and roll groups to become rising stars unlike rapper or hip hop artists since they are so popular now a days.

  2. I do feel like the band should have stayed together because them splitting definitely destroyed whatever momentum they had in charisma, energy, and most importantly working together.

    1. This makes me wonder about bands… Why split if they made great hits? Is it cause of fame? Betrayal? Hits make money right? So if the problems between the band was personal then they should just make it a business

      1. Exactly i agree but they feel like the reasons they split up are for good reasons and SOMETIMES it actaully is. Like for example when a band member is a drug addict or something crazy like that.

    1. They came out with an album a few years ago, other than that they have just been touring. The members of the band are from California.

  3. The lyrics is what really got to me. He said, “My heart is an open book for the whole world to read” which made me want to know more about his story and his life.

  4. I believe that the band wouldn’t have been equally successful if they didn’t temporarily break up. They would have became worst in my opinion. Everyone needed a break to work through their problems and issues. If they didn’t take a break they probably would have took their problems out on each other and would have caused a bigger fuss that before. They all needed some time alone to think. I feel that both the Lyrics and music itself was very powerful.

    1. Yeah I agree with you. It was a good thing they took a break to figure out things individually cause I think if they continued things the same way the problems might have been worse.

  5. i think they should’ve stayed and battled together instead of taking a break. they had bit hit song before they took the break if they kept the flow going they would’ve been a well known and succeed band than they are now. people forgot about these band during their break.

    1. I think they did good, sometimes taking a break is good for one another, it brings you to think better and have time for yourself because others have difficulties outside the music world that others don’t know.

  6. Not really a big fan of rock bands but this song isn’t so bad. I honestly think it was a good thing for them to take a break to figure out things on their own. I think the lyrics are very powerful because the lyrics describes the hardship and what they have to go through in order to finally find peace at home.

  7. Does the stigma about the behaviour, the substance abuse and heavy partying, of the members of rock bands affect the way we as listeners of music approach the genre?

  8. i am not a huge fan of rock bands and rock music in general. but listening to this song made me realize that the members are extremely talented and arguably more so than other musical genres. it must be incredibly difficult to create a melody, write lyrics to that melody, and performing it live over and over again. i think the piano playing at the beginning and the end of the song makes me feel a sense of relief. i hadn’t even realized i was almost holding my breathe waiting to here the soothing sounds of the piano again after the guitar playing. i wonder if this was done on purpose.

  9. Motley was the first old school band that always catches my attention, but this song was the best song that just brought awareness that even though you are out there making a difference in your life, their is no place like just being home with relaxation.

    1. Drugs has been the down fall of most people in the music history. It often starts off good but as soon as the addiction starts to be noticeable, individuals careers takes steps backwards. I believe they would of turn out very different if it wasn’t for their individual drug addiction

  11. I’m a big fan of solo piano music and when I heard the beginning of Home Sweet Home, it peeked my interest very quickly. The lyrics was not really the highlight for me, but the music itself was what really resonated with me. I feel like the guitar solo towards the end of the song was truly powerful and entrancing.

  13. The most common aspect among individuals is their cultural ethnic backgrounds. ” home sweet home ” is revealing the memories of his child hood. One of the greatest concepts of Philosophy is to wonder. Adults lose the concept of wondering, maybe in his song he’s addressing that he don’t wanna be grown anymore. Kids normally have the concept of wondering because they are currently still figuring things out. reconnecting to his bonds of his childhood would some what makes him feel
More comfortable since he’s distance from home.
